The first lesson discusses eternal life as the most important issue for every person. Other topics include : (a) having true fellowship with God; (b) the joy of our salvation; (c) Jesus is the Light , Satan is darkness; (d) the walk of the Christian in the light; (e) repentance, forgiveness and judgement.

Having a true love for Jesus is the answer to many challenges for the sincere Christian. That love will keep us from the love for the world, from the damaging heresies of antichrists, from lies and sinful practices that have shipwrecked many souls. The latter half of 1st John 2 gives us both promises and warnings concerning these isssues.

John, often called the Apostle of Love because he wrote so much about God's love, and understood it so well, writes in this chapter more about God's love for us as of the Father for His adopted children. Another issue about which John wrote forthrightly was sin.

One of John's concerns for God's children is that we be warned about the spirit of deception, the spirit of antichrist, which afflicted the Church from the beginning and is still active today to deceive many away from God and from eternal life. In this lesson a comparison is made between love and hatred, and between God the only source of true, pure love, and Satan, the source of hatred.

In closing this epistle (and our course), Chapter 5 emphasizes the central issue of life as being a true heart-felt belief in Jesus Christ as the only begotten Son of God. John gives many solid assurances of salvation, which we can use to examine our lives to determine whether we are truly saved or in need of getting saved.
