The First Epistle of John
Lesson Two
Part B

I John 2:15-29

Beware of Hindrances

Lesson Overview
In the second half of chapter two of this epistle, the apostle John warns of two forces that would work to rob us of eternal life: the love of the world and antichrists, who are ever trying to seduce us from our faith in Jesus as the promised Messiah.

He concludes the chapter by admonishing us to hold fast to the message of the gospel of Christ, thereby continuing in Him and in the Father; to trust in the Holy Spirit, not men, to teach us; and to recognize that if Jesus is righteous, then those who are born again will also live righteously.

Detailed Teaching

Verse 15

I John 2:15
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

Love not the world
That's a strong statement, yet it's a truth we ought to give ear to.

John was a man who walked with Jesus. He was a disciple who really knew what true love was all about. He took time to write more about the love of God than any other writer did in the Scriptures.

John loved the Lord so dearly. He fully understood the love of the Father.

John also understood that when the love of the Father is in you, it will take the place of the love for the world and the things of the world. It will take the place of the love for the pleasures of the world.

When the love of the Father is in you, it will cause you to get serious with God, falling deeply in love with Him. It will cause you to put God first in your life; He will become everything to you.

Verse 15 is written as a commandment to us: Love not the world!

A love for the world gets a hold of many. They love the mad pleasures of the world. They love the world and they love the things of the world. That's all they live for!

II Timothy 3:1,2a,4
This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves . . . traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God

We are warned here in II Timothy that this would be the state of things with the endtime generation.

Where do you stand today?
Are you in love with the world or are you in love with the Lord?

Are you in love with worldly things or are you in love with spiritual things?

Do you want the things of God or is it the world you really want?

John summed it up so we could know the difference: When we have the love of the world in us, we don't really have the love of the Father. And if we have the love of the Father in us, then we won't have the love of the world in our heart. It will either be one of these loves or the other.

John goes on, wanting to broaden our understanding about this matter. He explains what is involved in having a love for the world:

Verses 16,17

Three Realms of Temptation

I John 2:16,17
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

The Lord enlightened John to put into one sentence all that this world has to offer: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.

That's the world summed up in three parts; that's what it has to offer. It's all included in those three.

Now, we can look way back into Genesis and see that this is just the way the devil worked to deceive Eve in the garden.

Genesis 3:6
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

The lust of the flesh
She saw that the tree was good for food.

The lust of the eyes
It was pleasant to the eyes.

The pride of life
It was to be desired to make one wise.

The devil came along to entice Eve. He talked to her about that forbidden tree. He questioned the commandment of God and convinced her that the fruit would make her wise:

Genesis 3:5
For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

The devil convinced her this tree was something she needed to open her eyes, to make her as the gods (the pride of life). She saw the fruit looked good (lust of the eyes) and that it seemed to be good for food (lust of the flesh).

So Eve ate and she gave some to her husband to eat, and sin was brought into the world.

My, all the terrible things that have taken place in the world as the result of that fall!

This is all the world has to offer today: the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life. If we are going on in the love of God, none of this can have any part in us.

As Christians we are not of the world, and we should have no part with the world. Jesus wasn't of this world, and He has brought us into a relationship where neither are we of this world. Our citizenship is now in heaven.

We may have a paper stating we are citizens of a particular country in this world, but our real citizenship, our lasting citizenship, is in heaven. Our real loyalty is to heaven and to the Lord.

Colossians 3:1-4
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, Who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with Him in glory.

We don't want to allow our hearts to be entangled with this world or to be entangled with the pleasures of this world.

I Timothy 6:10
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

The love of money is a lust and greed in the hearts of many today, and it is the root of all evil. It is a lust that burns in the heart for more and more, no matter what it takes to get it. It's the way of the world.

Now, does the world love you? Do the things of the world love you? Does your car or your house love you? Do you wake up and find your bankbook saying, "Good morning. I love you"? Does the beautiful rug in the parlor tell you how much it loves you?

No, none of those things love you! So why love them?

Your children love you! Your mate loves you! God loves you! But the world doesn't love you, neither do the things of the world love you. So why should you owe your love and allegiance to them?

You came into the world without those things, and, if they were taken away, you're able to live without them.

Philippians 4:11-12
Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.

True values don't come into our life as the result of having more and more things, of loving things. True values don't come into our life by having a love for the pleasures of this world and pursuing after them.

The bottom line is this: When you don't have a love for the world or the things of the world, then your heart has room for the true love of God.

If you love the world and the things of the world, it will take all your time and all your heart. That is all you will live for. It will take all your energy and strength.

If you want to love the world and give yourself over to the pleasures of the world, it will involve all of your time and interest. And if the love of the world is in you, God plainly says that the love of the Father is not in you.

Verse 18

I John 2:18
Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

The Last Days
Once again, John is addressing those who are young in the faith. He felt he was living in the last time, and, surely, he was in the last days.

That term last days encompasses this whole dispensation, from the restoration at the time of Christ right on down to His second coming for the Church.

In the Scriptures when it speaks of the latter times, it brings it even closer to the end: down to the last of the last days.

The Antichrist
Now John speaks of the Antichrist. They had heard about this man who will one day rise. The Bible warns about him ahead of time. We find that the whole world will worship him: all whose names are not written in the Lamb's book of life (Revelation 13: 8).

John goes on to say that there are many antichrists (plural) already in the world. He says that by this we can know it is the last time.

What does the word antichrist mean?

It means that one is against Jesus Christ. The Antichrist will be a counterfeit of Jesus, trying to duplicate the works of Jesus with lying signs and wonders.

Now, why did John bring this up? Where do these antichrists come from?

Verse 19

I John 2:19
They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

The church of John's day had these antichrists right in their midst. Right in the flock of those who were supposed to be sons of God were those who never were what they professed to be. The devil had them right amongst the true believers.

Matthew 13:24-25
Another parable put He forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.

Yes, both saints and hypocrites go to church: both wheat and tares.

Here, right amongst the crowd of believers at Jerusalem, we find John referring to antichrists going out from among them.

These antichrists were once there with them, but they went out that they might be manifest that they were not of the group of true believers. They had some ideas of their own, things Satan had put into their heart, and they were labeled as being antichrists.

Now, Paul ran across the same thing: those who went about sowing heresies in the church. They tried to get the believers to turn from the truth to believe their lies.

Galatians 1:8
But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

We can't listen to everything. We can't take everything that comes along and consider it to be true, just because someone told us it was true.

Ephesians 4:14
That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive

Now, let's consider what all of this means. John warned us that it is important to know that we have the love of God in us. If we have the love of the Father in us (instead of the love of the world and the things of the world), when antichrists come along, we won't be deceived.

The only way to overcome the wicked one is having the love of God in our hearts, letting His Word abide in us.

There's a strong spirit of antichrist in the world today. The bitterness against God that's out there is unbelievable! There is opposition against the church on every side.

The Answer
Love Jesus with all your heart: That's the answer. This one truth about our Christian experience is truly wonderful: it is a love relationship.

Living for the Lord is not a do and don't relationship. It's a relationship where we love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. We will put the Lord first in our life. He will be the object of our affection.

Many worry about the Antichrist. They have many questions and fears:
"Will the church be here when he comes?"
"Will I have to face his opposition?"

Understand this truth: If you have the love of the Father in you, as you ought to, you have nothing to worry about. Keep your heart and attention fixed on Jesus, and these events will have no part of you.

We want to be ready when Jesus comes, regardless of when that will take place.

Verse 20

I John 2:20
But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.

When we have that unction, we will be led down the road of truth.

Is this true in your life?

That Holy One is known as the Spirit of Truth, the Holy Spirit. Is He your teacher?

Verse 21

I John 2:21
I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.

John was writing to those who had had the truth revealed to them. The Word of God had been ministered to them in truth, and they were being encouraged to continue on in that truth.

What is the Truth?

John 17:17
Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy Word is truth.

John 14:6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.

The Word of God is truth, revealing Jesus Christ. The truth had been revealed to these whom John was writing to, and they had embraced it. They were convinced that they should receive the Christ and follow Him.

If we have Jesus, we are abiding in the truth. We have eternal life through Jesus Christ. And if we follow on with Him, we will follow truth.

John said no lie is of the truth. If it's a lie, then it is of the devil. Now, if you're believing the Word of God, then you're believing the truth.

Verse 22

I John 2:22
Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.

John is stating that all who deny that Jesus is the Christ — denying that He is the Messiah, the Promised One of God — are lying. They are antichrist, denying the Father and the Son.

Remember now: Those who are antichrist are those who deny that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, that He is the Son of God.

The Son of God
For someone to be a father means that they have a child. Father implies parenthood. You can be a husband and have no children, but those who are fathers have had at least one child.

Now, God is a Father, and Jesus Christ is His only begotten Son. When Jesus was baptized, God the Father said, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

To have a father relationship there has to be a son relationship (see Matthew 3:17). Jesus was the first born among many brethren. We are sons of God when we receive Jesus Christ as our personal Saviour. We have the Spirit of Christ in us, crying, "Abba, Father."

Romans 8:15-16
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God

We have that Spirit of adoption, but Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God.

Matthew 1:18,22,23
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: when as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost . . .

Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Verses 23,24

I John 2:23,24
Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also. Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.

That sums it up for us: linking the Father and the Son together.

Verse 25

The Greatest Promise

I John 2:25
And this is the promise that He hath promised us, even eternal life.

God promises eternal life to all who will believe in His Son, Jesus Christ: believing in His atoning death — in His shed blood as the atonement for sin — and believing that God raised Him from the dead.

This is the promise that we must ever keep close to our heart. It is the greatest promise ever made unto us, and we'd best not play around with it.

Verse 26

I John 2:26
These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.

A Promise and a Warning
Put verses 25 and 26 together. One promises eternal life, and the other warns about those who would seduce you away from that promise.

Yes, the promise is eternal life, but the reason for John's writing is that there are seducing spirits who are ever at work to seduce souls away from the hope of everlasting life found in Jesus.

Consider the importance of this. We can't afford to let this promise slip through our hands. Neither can we afford to allow someone to come along and mess up our thinking, turning us away from the truth of God found in Jesus Christ.

Paul had this same concern. He really wanted God's people to stay on track. He didn't want them to end up shipwrecked. He didn't want their faith to be overthrown.

I Timothy 4:1
Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils

Think about this: You have the faith, you're believing in the Truth, then some seducing spirit comes along to twist your thinking and lead you away from the hope of the promise which God gave to us.

They bring some new doctrine (teaching) into your life that will only mess you up and lead you away from the truths of God's Word.

Philippians 2:12b
. . . work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

You've got a duty and responsibility to your own soul, and that responsibility can't be passed off onto someone else's shoulders. You have to look out for your own soul, keeping yourself in the truth.

Matthew 24:4-5
And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in My name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

We find here in Matthew 24 that Jesus also warns us about those who would try to deceive.

John's great concern about this deception was that these deceivers had been right in the midst of God's people and were really antichrist. He warns lest we be deceived by them.

A Major Purpose of this Epistle
We can conclude this then: One of the main reasons John wrote this epistle was to enlighten the children of God about seducing spirits: those who would try to mess up your thinking and lead you astray.

II Timothy 3:4b,5
. . . lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

II Timothy 4:3-4
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

You must be careful what you listen to and who you listen to. Be sure that you read the Word of God. Make sure it's the preaching of the pure Word of God that is allowed to take root and lodging in your heart and soul, not man's ideas or doctrines of devils.

If you want to be sure you know what is true, get your Bible and read it carefully. You'll find the truth of God there. You'll find the answer there.

If you want to grow in the Lord, stay in His Word. Take heed! That's the warning. Be careful you don't pay heed to those who would seduce you away from the truth.

Verse 27

The Anointing

I John 2:27
But the anointing which ye have received of Him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in Him.

The anointing of God plays a two-fold part in giving us the understanding we need in our Christian life:

First of all, God gave us gifts and they operate under His anointing.

Ephesians 4:11-13
And He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ

Secondly, the anointing is there to teach us the truth.

We find this second part of God's anointing spoken of in John's epistle. He speaks of the anointing abiding in you, meaning that the Holy Spirit is given as a teacher. His anointing is there to teach us the truth.

John 14:26
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Now, we have anointed teachers, but we also have the anointing in us to take the teaching right into our hearts and lives. We also have the anointing to enable us to personally get into the Word and be fed.

As the Spirit of God teaches us, we will assuredly be brought into the truth. We will not enter into believing any lie. The Holy Spirit will not deceive us in any way about anything.

So today, we find the Holy Spirit teaching us through human vessels, quickening the teaching through the anointing, and bringing it into our hearts and making it real to us.

And we also find the Holy Spirit teaching us personally as we dig into the Word of God.

Some say they read the Bible but they can't understand what they read. What's missing?

The Ethiopian eunuch said to Philip, "I have need that someone should guide me." He had been reading the Word but had difficulty comprehending what he read (see Acts 8:26-39).

We must realize that the Holy Spirit is given to us as a teacher. He is going to take the Word and quicken it into our hearts and open up our understanding.

You say you read the Bible but can't understand what you read? Well, it shows you lack the anointing: You're not yielded unto the Holy Spirit, or it may be that you lack the Baptism of the Spirit.

If you have gotten saved, receiving Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour, you should seek out the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. Ask God to fill you with His Holy Spirit. Then you will find the anointing will be there to teach you.

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit
Now, the Spirit of God is with every believer. But when you receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, then He comes to reside in you.

I Corinthians 6:19
What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

So, if you lack the Baptism of the Spirit, you need to seek it out. That's what will bring forth the anointing in your life.

The Need to Ask
Now, there are other areas where we may be found lacking.

James 4:2b
. . . ye have not, because ye ask not.

We may lack some important things merely because we neglect to ask, failing to see in the Word the necessity of doing this.

James 1:5
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

There is a lack of wisdom in the lives of many of God's people. Many struggle with this lack in their life. They scratch their head not knowing how to apply even what they do know.

If they would only obey the Word and ask God for wisdom, He said He would give it: providing that you ask in faith.

James 1:6-8
But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

We can receive much from the hand of God when we will ask in faith, nothing wavering. Just as we receive wisdom by asking for it, we can also receive anointing by asking for it.

God wants us to be anointed of the Holy Spirit that we may be led into all truth.

Verse 28

I John 2:28
And now, little children, abide in Him; that, when He shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before Him at His coming.

Once again, John warns that those who deny Jesus will be ashamed when He appears. Those who listen to antichrist, giving ear to those who deny the Father and the Son, will lose their confidence.

But if we abide in Him, we will have confidence and not be ashamed.

Abiding in Jesus

John 15:4-5
Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in Me.

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in Me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without Me ye can do nothing.

We've got to abide! Except we abide in the vine, we can't bring forth fruit and we'll lose out in the end.

John 15:7
If ye abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

There are some great promises for those who abide, those who continue in Jesus. Don't allow yourself to be cheated out of all God has for you. Don't allow anyone to deceive you and lead you away from Jesus.

Verse 29

The Need to Live Righteously

I John 2:29
If ye know that He is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of Him.

Every one that DOES righteousness is born of Him. It doesn't say every one that COUNTS it as righteousness. It's a matter of doing. Righteousness is evidence in one's life that they know Jesus.

Some would look for justification for the sin in their life. But those who live in sin are living contrary to the righteousness of Jesus. They are not abiding in Jesus; they are abiding in sin!

II Corinthians 5:17
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Paul didn't say that it was OK to continue living the way you lived before you got saved. He didn't say: "Since you are now in Jesus, it doesn't matter how you live — after all, you're under grace."

No, Paul, like John, came along with a firm message. Like John, he said it like it is: If any man be in Christ, he IS a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, ALL things are become new.

Now, if your life doesn't add up, there's no point in getting mad. If you live in sin and iniquity, you're not righteous, and that's all there is to it.

God doesn't want you to be deceived. That's why He warns so strongly in the Word about living a holy life. He doesn't want you to die in your sins, thinking you could make it through somehow.

Repent, and turn wholeheartedly to the Lord, and you'll not be ashamed at the coming of Jesus.
